“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do something I can do.”
― Helen Keller
Have you ever heard the famous tale by Loren Eiseley? It is commonly referred to as "The Starfish Story". Let me tell you a brief version to give you an idea of where this is going...
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”
The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The sun is up and the tide is going out; If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”
“Son”, the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and tossed it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
Don't ever let anyone make you believe you can't make a difference. Each and every one of us has something to offer!
As you may have guessed running any organization, either big or small, takes a lot of hard work, and many rescues simply couldn't do it without the help of volunteers, donors, and local businesses. Without the kindness and generosity of those willing to give of themselves, organizations like the various rescues we have listed on our site would not be able to help animals in need! If you haven't already, please take a minute to read about the rescues and consider getting involved.
We understand that not everyone is in the position to adopt or foster but there are various other ways to to get involved. For instance, do you have a few extra dollars left at the end of the week? Consider sponsoring a shelter pet. Oftentimes it is less expensive than you think to sponsor, and can be done in short and inexpensive increments. $20 here and there may not be much for the average person to spare, but it makes a world of difference and can often mean saving one extra dog, cat, bird, etc.
If you don't have extra money, which is completely understandable, do you have a few extra hours in your day or week? Consider volunteering! Do you have a special skill or knowledge? Volunteering with animals doesn't always mean you have to give your time to cleaning kennels and litter boxes or walking dogs, although those are some of the most helpful things you can give to a rescue. Are you skilled in writing? Graphic design? Social Media? You might be surprised what skills you have that a rescue organization is in need of.
Finally, here at Fauna Farms we believe that one of the most helpful things anyone can do is become educated about animal issues and spread awareness. Do you have a friend with an unaltered dog or cat? Perhaps explain to them the benefits of spay/neuter. Or do you know someone that really wants a puppy, but doesn't know where to start? Explain to them that adoption is the way to go, and that thousands of perfectly normal dogs, cats and other animals are available for adoption every single day!
So you see, as we have said before, you as one individual can make a difference. Whether you adopt, foster, sponsor, volunteer, donate, or educate you are making a positive impact on the life of an animal!
